Agardhiella subulata. Agar grows in a very similar bushy pattern to Gracillaria. It is close in appearance to Red Gracillaria, except the branches are somewhat translucent and rubbery. Fish love it as food. This is the algae from which agar is derived for bacterial culturing.

Agardhiella subulata (C.Agardh) Kraft & M.J.Wynne, 1979 species Accepted Name authority: UKSI Establishment means: Non-native Establishment status: GB Establishment Status - Established Five red algae, Agardhiella subulata, Gracilariopsis longissima, Gracilaria vermiculophylla, Polysiphonia morrowii, and Pyropia elongata were sampled in winter for the extraction of phycoerythrin. The extracted phycoerythrin molecules were compared with the commercial phycoerythrin to determine the intrinsic fluorescence characteristics of the single pigments.
